Few American orchestras can claim a history as eventful as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which has been shaping the city's cultural life since 1919. Founded and personally bankrolled by copper baron William Andrews Clark Jr., the LA Phil found its footing under a string of legendary conductors, from Otto Klemperer, who introduced Los Angeles to Stravinsky and Schoenberg, to Zubin Mehta, Esa Pekka Salonen, and now Gustavo Dudamel, who has led the orchestra since 2009. Since moving into the Frank Gehry designed Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2003, the orchestra has presented 57 world premieres and commissioned or co commissioned 63 new works, with composer John Adams serving as creative chair. Summers bring the action outdoors to the Hollywood Bowl, one of the most beloved concert venues in the country.
