About

Los Destellos did something genuinely radical for cumbia: they swapped out the horns and accordion for electric guitar and bass, giving the genre a sharp, twangy new edge. Formed in Lima in 1966 by Enrique Delgado Montes, the band pulled in flavors from psychedelic and surf rock alongside traditional Peruvian styles, and in doing so they laid the groundwork for what would become known as cumbia peruana. Their influence spread widely, with bands like Los Mirlos and Los Diablos Rojos following in their wake. Their biggest commercial moment came in 1970 with the single "Elsa", which shifted over a million copies. The band has kept going through the decades under different leadership, and under Edith Delgado Montes they even contributed recordings to the 2009 film The Milk of Sorrow. With a discography stretching from 1968 well into the 2010s, Los Destellos remain one of the defining names in Peruvian cumbia.
