About

Louis Lortie has built one of the most wide ranging careers in classical piano, performing as soloist with orchestras from the Chicago Symphony and Concertgebouw to the Hong Kong Philharmonic and the Warsaw Philharmonic. The Montreal born pianist is especially known for his interpretations of Ravel, Chopin and Beethoven, and has recorded more than thirty albums for Chandos. His recording of the complete Saint Saëns piano concertos with the BBC Philharmonic and Edward Gardner is a good entry point into what he does best: technically precise playing that still feels alive. He took first prize at the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in 1984, which helped launch a career that has since taken him to Queen Elizabeth Hall, the National Arts Centre and Roy Thomson Hall. Outside of performing, he is Master in Residence at the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel in Belgium and co founder and artistic director of the LacMus International Festival on Lake Como. Canada has recognised him as an Officer of the Order of Canada and a Knight of the National Order of Quebec.
