Few jazz musicians have pushed the clarinet into as many unexpected territories as Louis Sclavis. The Lyon born multi instrumentalist works across clarinet, bass clarinet, and soprano saxophone, moving freely between avant garde jazz, free improvisation, and contemporary classical music. He was among the first to weave French folk music into a jazz context, and his long collaboration with hurdy gurdy player Valentin Clastrier stands as one of the more distinctive pairings in modern French jazz. His film work is equally substantial, with scores for directors including Bertrand Tavernier and Amos Gitaï. Sclavis has been a fixture on the ECM label for decades, with records like Silk and Salt Melodies and Characters On A Wall showing how his sound keeps evolving without losing its singular character. His latest album India, released in 2025 on Yolk Records, is a deliberate callback to his 1987 album Chine, with nine new compositions recorded by a fresh quintet featuring Sarah Murcia, Benjamin Moussay, Olivier Laisney, and Christophe Lavergne.
