Lucas Debargue arrived at the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition as a complete unknown and left as one of its most talked about figures. He took fourth prize, but what really turned heads was his second round program: Medtner's Sonata No. 1 in F Minor paired with Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit, music that most pianists leave well alone. Moscow's critics gave him a special prize of their own. Since then he has built a serious international schedule, playing venues from Carnegie Hall to the Elbphilharmonie, and signed with Sony Classical, releasing several albums including a complete Fauré solo piano recording made on a Stephen Paulello Opus 102 Concert Grand. He is also a committed composer, with a catalogue that spans chamber works, piano pieces and songs set to texts by Baudelaire. Gidon Kremer named him a permanent guest of Kremerata Baltica in 2019, and a documentary about him won the International Classical Music Award for best music documentary in 2021.
