About
Few Dutch drummers have carved out as distinct a niche as Lucas van Merwijk, whose fluency in Latin jazz, Afro Cuban rhythms, and world music has kept him at the center of the European jazz scene since the early 1980s. He founded the Cubop City Big Band, which blends Cuban mambo and Latin jazz with a modern edge, and has released a steady stream of albums with the group stretching from The Machito Project in 1995 through to El Inolvidable in 2022. He also leads the international percussion outfit Drums United and Van Merwijk's Music Machine, and has shared stages and sessions with names like Jessye Norman, Candy Dulfer, and the Metropole Orchestra. Beyond performing, van Merwijk holds professorships at both the Conservatory of Amsterdam and Codarts in Rotterdam, teaching drums and Latin percussion. He has published two drum books, World Beat: World Rhythms for Drum Set and Advanced Coordination Studies, and readers of De Slagwerkkrant voted him best jazz or fusion drummer in the Benelux repeatedly between 1993 and 2020. In 2010 he picked up the Global Act Award for sustained impact in world music.
