About
Ludvig Søndergaard is a Danish drummer and composer who has made Amsterdam his base, and his debut album Creature Dances on Dox Records gives a clear picture of where his head is at. The record collides intimate piano songs with rhythmic constructions built from irregular patterns, twelve tone rows and electronic textures. His sextet plays deliberately raw, unsettling and sometimes outright ugly, the idea being that darkness and beauty only make sense next to each other. The jury that awarded him the Keep an Eye The Records prize praised the music for its urgency, sincerity and the balance between written material and improvisation. Søndergaard's stated mission is to interpret the world and then show it from an unexpected angle, and his six piece band chases the frayed edges of jazz fusion to do exactly that. The lineup brings together flute, alto saxophone, piano and synth, vibraphone and double bass, giving the music a distinctly percussive ecosystem where curiosity drives every decision.
