The New York Times once called Lyfe Jennings a "socially minded R&B singer", and that description barely scratches the surface. The Toledo born soul and contemporary R&B artist plays guitar, bass, and piano, and he weaves all of that into his recordings rather than leaving it to session players. His debut album Lyfe 268 192, released in 2004 on Columbia Records, took its title from his prison number, and that raw, unfiltered honesty has been the thread running through everything he does. His single "S.E.X" from the 2006 album The Phoenix became known for encouraging young people to abstain, which is not exactly standard R&B fare. Jennings has kept releasing music on his own terms, recording his 2015 album Tree of Lyfe largely in his home studio. He put it plainly at the time: he is not interested in reinvention, he wants to go deeper. His discography now stretches to seven studio albums, with 777 arriving in 2019.
