About
Maarja Nuut is an Estonian singer and violinist whose sound sits at the crossroads of ancient village folk and contemporary ambient music. She digs deep into pre Soviet Estonian folk traditions, drawing on old 78 rpm recordings as raw material, then transforms them into something entirely her own using violin, looper, and keyboard. That layering approach gives her live performances an almost hypnotic quality. She picked up the Artists Prize at Tallinn Music Week when she debuted as a solo artist in 2013, which says a lot about how quickly she made an impression. She has also teamed up with electronic artist Hendrik Kaljujärv, known as Ruum, whose abstract electronic textures complement her folk rooted sound beautifully. The two released their collaborative album Muunduja, meaning Shifter, in 2018, and have performed together at international festivals.
