Few producers in hip hop can claim a catalogue as wildly varied as Madlib's. The Oxnard beatmaker has worked under a string of aliases, including Quasimoto, Yesterdays New Quintet, and of course Beat Konducta, each one a different creative universe. His 2004 collaboration with MF DOOM as Madvillain produced Madvillainy, still his best selling record, and his pairing with J Dilla as Jaylib showed his gift for building something genuinely surprising out of other people's sounds. The Beat Konducta series alone tells you a lot about how his mind works: short, cinematic instrumental pieces built from Bollywood samples, 1970s soul, jazz and funk, framed as imaginary movie soundtracks or tributes to fallen friends like J Dilla. His 2014 album Piñata with Freddie Gibbs brought his production to a wider audience, wrapping Gibbs's street narratives in thick, dusty loops that felt like nothing else out that year.
