About

Also known as: Mafikozolo

Mafikizolo have been turning South African pop into continent wide hits since the late nineties. They started out as a kwaito group and found their groove with Gate Crashers in 2000, still their best selling record, which carried "Lotto" and "Majika". Sibongile followed in 2002, giving them the hit "Ndihamba Nawe", and Kwela brought in Hugh Masekela on "Kwela Kwela". The group is now built around Theo Kgosinkwe and lead singer Nhlanhla Mafu, after founding member Tebogo Madingoane was killed in 2004. After a hiatus, they came back in 2013 with "Khona", featuring Uhuru, and the Reunited album swept the South African Music Awards that year. They later celebrated two decades in music with the album 20, which includes "Ofana Nawe" with Yemi Alade. Songs like "Colors of Africa" with Diamond Platnumz and DJ Maphorisa and "Kucheza" pushed their sound well beyond home. All told, they have collected 14 South African Music Awards and two MTV Africa Music Awards. Their twelfth studio album, Idwala, landed in 2022.
