If you've ever heard the Borat soundtrack and wondered who was behind that irresistible brass and violin chaos, it was Mahala Rai Banda. The Bucharest based Romani group built their sound around a head spinning mix of traditional lăutari music and Balkan Beats club energy, with violins, accordions, and brass players from Zece Prăjini all thrown into the pot. Violinist and composer Aurel Ionita leads the band and comes from a family of lăutari out of Clejani, with ties to Taraf de Haïdouks. Their self titled debut landed on Crammed Discs in 2005 and hit number 3 on the World Music Charts Europe. The follow up, Ghetto Blasters, climbed to number 2 on the same chart and made Songlines' top ten albums of 2009. Over 200 concerts across 26 countries, placements on compilations from France to South Africa, remixes from the likes of Nouvelle Vague and Felix B of Basement Jaxx, and even a spot in the video game LittleBigPlanet 2. Not bad for a brass band from Bucharest.
