Gustav Mahler poured every part of himself into his compositions, and each of his symphonies opens a window onto his inner world. None sits closer to the bone than the Sixth, sometimes called the Tragic. Across its four movements, light and darkness wage a slow, relentless battle, and Mahler reportedly tied his own fate to the outcome. The connection turned out to be chillingly literal: shortly after he finished the work, his young daughter died and he was diagnosed with a serious heart condition. His wife Alma was shaken to her core by the piece, writing that the two of them wept together and felt something almost prophetic in the music. Beyond the Sixth, Mahler's broader catalogue spans the full sweep of late Romantic orchestral ambition. Born in Kaliště in what was then Austria, he worked in the classical and Romantic traditions, composing symphonies, art songs and music for stage. His symphonies in particular are enormous in scale and emotional scope, treating themes of fate, love, suffering and hope as if they were forces of nature.
