Makaya McCraven operates somewhere between jazz drumming and production wizardry, and that tension is exactly what makes his music so compelling. Born in Paris and based in Chicago, he built his reputation through a weekly residency format where he recorded live sets and then sculpted the results into something more layered and cinematic. That approach defined his 2015 breakthrough In the Moment and carried through to Universal Beings in 2018, a double album featuring collaborators from New York, London, and Los Angeles that landed him a Jazz Journalists Association Awards nomination. In 2020, DownBeat's Critics Poll named him Rising Star for both best producer and best drummer, a dual nod that says a lot about how hard he is to pin down. His 2022 album In These Times, released through Nonesuch and XL Recordings after years in development, stands as one of his most ambitious projects yet.
