About
MALIQ & D'Essentials built their reputation the old fashioned way, playing soul and soulful music at lounges and cafes across Jakarta before breaking through at the Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival in 2005. The group's name is actually an acronym for Music and Live Instrument Quality, and their signature blend of Indonesian and English lyrics quickly set them apart in the Indonesian music scene. Their debut album 1st produced a string of singles, with "Untitled" being the track that really put them on the map, and their reach extended well beyond Indonesia into Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam. Over the years the lineup evolved, and so did their sound. Their sophomore record Free Your Mind took home Best Jazz Album at the 2008 AMI Awards, while their third album Mata Hati Telinga was named Best Album 2009 by Rolling Stone Indonesia. They also launched their own label, Organic Records, using it to nurture new acts like Soulvibe and The Upstairs alongside their own releases. Their fourth album The Beginning of a Beautiful Life continued to broaden their style, pulling in pop and rock influences without losing the jazzy soul core that made them.
