Mamaleek operates in the shadows by design. The San Francisco duo, two anonymous brothers, built their sound around a deliberately difficult question: what happens when black metal collides with jazz, psychedelic textures, Middle Eastern melody, and electronic breakbeats all at once? The result is something that genuinely resists categorization. Noisey compared them to Portishead playing lo fi metal, which gets somewhere close but still doesn't quite cover it. Their 2011 album Kurdaitcha topped a major "Best Free Albums" list that year, and the band has since kept releasing through The Flenser, the San Francisco label that has been their home for most of their catalog. Nine albums deep, with their most recent full length Vida Blue arriving in 2024, they continue to push into stranger and more unsettling territory.
