Wolfgang Van Halen built Mammoth as a one man project while still playing bass in Van Halen, handling every instrument and production duty himself, an approach he drew partly from Dave Grohl's early Foo Fighters work. The debut album, released in 2021, earned strong reviews for its range and technical depth, with critics noting that no two tracks feel the same and that the musicianship is genuinely virtuosic rather than just name recognition impressive. Wolfgang recorded at 5150 Studios over several years, delaying the release to spend time with his father Eddie, who passed away in October 2020. The band's name traces back to Mammoth, the early act that eventually became Van Halen, and Wolfgang has been open about wanting to honour that legacy while carving out a sound that is clearly his own. After expanding to a full lineup for touring, the band put out Mammoth II in 2023 and followed it up with The End in 2025, dropping the WVH from their name that same year. Three albums in, they have moved well past the debut's identity questions.
