About

Psychedelic rock with tribal rhythms and ethnic textures was the foundation Mandragora built on when Simon Williams formed the Brighton band in 1983. They cut their teeth on the UK free festival circuit, playing Stonehenge and three appearances at Glastonbury, and earned enough credibility to open for Hawkwind, The Wailers, Gil Scott Heron and The Orb. The second album Head First, shaped heavily by synthesizer pioneer Phil Thornton and his Moog, landed them BBC radio play from John Peel and Mark Radcliffe. Over the years the sound kept shifting. Their 1998 album Pollen pulled together dub, psy trance and Celtic music, and featured guest turns from Howard Marks and Arthur Brown. After a hiatus, Williams and Thornton revived the project with Bosnian singer Dalinda, who brought a whole new global dimension to the mix, and the band moved firmly into world music and electronic dance territory. They were signed to Delerium Records and have toured across Europe and beyond throughout their career.
