Named after Mánagarmr, the wolf of Norse legend said to devour the moon at Ragnarök, Månegarm have been one of Sweden's most distinctive viking metal acts since forming in Norrtälje in 1995. Their sound pulls together black metal aggression, folk instrumentation like violin and flute, and old Norse themes in a way that feels genuinely rooted rather than costumed. The second demo, Ur Nattvindar, was the turning point where violins and female vocals arrived, and the band never really looked back from that direction. Over a string of albums on labels including Displeased Records, Black Lodge, Regain Records and Napalm Records, they kept pushing the folk and viking elements further. Vredens Tid from 2005 and Legions of the North from 2013 broadened their reach across Europe. The band also pulled off a curious detour with Urminnes Hävd, a fully acoustic folk EP that surprised fans expecting metal. Drummer and founding member Erik Grawsiö has doubled as frontman since 2000, which is not the most obvious career move but has worked out just fine. More recently, the band put out the official video for Sigrblot in 2025.
