About
Manzanita y su Conjunto played a defining role in shaping cumbia peruana into something distinct from its Colombian origins, and the music press has not been shy about saying so. Songlines called their sound a revolution that left an indelible mark on Latin American music as a whole. Guitarist Berardo "Manzanita" Hernández founded the group in 1969, releasing their debut Arre Caballito on Dinsa Records that same year. Their 1973 album El Nuevo Sonido de Manzanita sits at a fascinating crossroads between Peruvian tropical music and cumbia, and unusually for the era it features a horn section. After Hernández passed away in 2007, his son Berardo Hernández Jr. stepped up under the name Manzanita Jr. to keep the group going. Analog Africa gave their classic seventies material a wider audience with the 2021 compilation Trujillo, Perú 1971, 1974.
