Reggae music has a super relaxed, feel good vibe, but there’s actually a lot going on under the surface. It started in Jamaica in the late 1960s, growing out of earlier styles like ska and rocksteady. One of the things that instantly makes reggae stand out is the rhythm, instead of focusing on the main beats, it hits the offbeat, giving it that laid back “skanking” groove that makes you want to sway along. Add in deep basslines, smooth vocals, and lyrics that often talk about love, justice, or spirituality, and you’ve got a sound that feels both chill and meaningful at the same time.

Reggae didn’t just stay in Jamaica either, it spread all over the world pretty quickly. By the 1970s, artists like Bob Marley turned it into a global phenomenon, using music to talk about social issues and connect people across cultures. It also influenced loads of other genres, like hip hop, electronic, and even punk. A fun fact is that the word “reggae” itself only really became known after a 1968 song called Do the Reggay by Toots and the Maytals, and the genre has even been recognized by UNESCO as part of world cultural heritage because of its global impact.

When people talk about “world music,” they’re usually talking about a much bigger mix of sounds from all over the planet. It’s basically a catch all term for music that comes from different cultures outside the mainstream Western pop scene. That could be anything from African drumming to Indian classical music or Latin rhythms, often using traditional instruments and native languages. What makes it interesting is how it reflects each culture’s identity, and how artists sometimes blend these styles together to create something totally new. So while reggae is one specific genre with a strong identity, world music is more like a huge global playlist that shows just how diverse music can be.
