Tory Lanez built a reputation as one of the more versatile figures in Canadian hip hop, blending R&B, rap, and dancehall in ways that kept people guessing about where he'd land next. Born Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson in Brampton, Ontario, he was first discovered by Sean Kingston after Kingston caught a video of him freestyling over Lloyd Banks. His 2016 debut album I Told You went the alternative R&B route and landed two singles on the Billboard Hot 100, with "Say It" and "Luv" charting at numbers 23 and 19. Chixtape 5 in 2019 pushed him to number two on the Billboard 200, and he kept releasing music at a serious pace across eight studio albums. His run came to a halt in August 2023 when he was sentenced to ten years in prison after being convicted of shooting Megan Thee Stallion in 2020, found guilty on charges of first degree assault with a firearm, discharging a firearm with gross negligence, and possession of a concealed weapon in a vehicle. His eighth album, Peterson, still entered the Billboard 200 at number 25 in 2025.
