Guinness World Records called him the leader of a second generation reggaeton revolution, and that description fits J Balvin about as well as anything could. The Colombian singer from Medellín built one of the biggest careers in Latin music by staying almost entirely in Spanish, even while working alongside Beyoncé, Pharrell Williams, Cardi B and Dua Lipa. His 2014 single "6 AM" with Farruko cracked the top of the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, and he kept the momentum going with "Ay Vamos", "Ginza" and the 2016 album Energia. "Mi Gente" with Willy William hit number one on Spotify's Global Top 50 in 2017 and eventually crossed a billion YouTube views. Balvin's sound is rooted in reggaeton but he has pulled in electronica, house, Latin trap and R&B over the years, crediting Daddy Yankee as a formative influence alongside rock acts like Metallica and Nirvana. He became the first Latino to headline Coachella, Tomorrowland and Lollapalooza, and his collaboration with Cardi B and Bad Bunny on "I Like It" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. His sixth studio album Rayo arrived in 2024.
