Few artists have bridged the gap between Lagos and global pop culture as convincingly as Wizkid. Born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, he built his reputation on a sound that weaves afrobeats, R&B, dancehall and reggae into something undeniably his own. His 2011 debut Superstar put him on the map in Nigeria, but it was his collaboration with Drake on "One Dance" in 2016 that landed him in the Guinness World Records as the first afrobeats artist to appear there. The track hit number one in 15 countries, including the US Billboard Hot 100. From there, Wizkid only pushed further. His fourth album Made in Lagos, released in 2020, topped the Billboard World Albums chart and featured "Essence" with Tems, the first Nigerian song to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. A remix with Justin Bieber took it into the top ten. He also picked up a Grammy for Best Music Video for his work on Beyoncé's "Brown Skin Girl". His sixth album Morayo, released in November 2024, broke the record for the biggest streaming debut for an African album on Spotify.
