About
Also known as: Gorilaz, Gorrilaz, ゴリラズ, 街頭霸王
Gorillaz pull off something genuinely weird: a band where the actual musicians hide behind four fictional cartoon characters, created by Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett back in 1998. The concept grew out of a shared frustration with hollow pop spectacle, and it gave Albarn room to wander far from the Britpop world of Blur, folding in hip hop, dub, electronic music, Latin rhythms and pretty much anything else that suited the moment. Their debut single 'Clint Eastwood' announced the project in style, and Demon Days in 2005 pushed them to another level entirely, going six times platinum in the UK with 'Feel Good Inc.' as its centrepiece. Each album has tended to bring a fresh angle, from the environmentalist themes of Plastic Beach to the guest heavy Humanz. Their ninth studio album, The Mountain, drew inspiration from India and landed as some of their most critically praised work in years.
