About
Marcel Worms has one of the odder side projects in contemporary piano: a growing stack of new blues pieces, some 200 of them, written by composers from about 50 countries. "New Blues for Piano" premiered at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam in 1997, and he took it around the world until 2012. He likes building programmes around a theme, from jazz influences in 20th century piano music to tango, and even concerts inspired by Mondrian, Van Gogh and Picasso. His other great passion is Federico Mompou. Worms has made three CDs of the Spanish composer's music, organised a three day Mompou festival in Amsterdam, and travelled to Barcelona to track down unpublished works. In 2009 he became the first pianist to perform them. He specialised in 20th century and chamber music, and has recorded 15 solo CDs and 11 more with chamber groups. He also plays jazz.
