About

Marcelo Nisinman is an Argentinian bandoneon player, composer and arranger whose music refuses to sit still. Based in Basel, he has built a style that takes the deep roots of Buenos Aires tango and pulls them in unexpected directions, weaving in atonality and contemporary techniques to arrive somewhere genuinely his own. He has shared stages with Gidon Kremer, Gary Burton, Ute Lemper and the Philadelphia Orchestra under Charles Dutoit, and has performed alongside tango legends including Roberto Goyeneche and Libertad Lamarque. His compositions range from symphony orchestra to string quartet, and in 2004 he premiered his first chamber opera, Señor Retorcimientos, in Basel. He served as composer in residence at the Oxford Chamber Music Festival, and his recorded work includes a completely reworked version of Piazzolla's Maria de Buenos Aires as well as Desvios, a tango theater piece with texts by Carlos Trafic. In 2009 he co founded the quartet Tango Factory with clarinetist Chen Halevi, a group built around exploring tango through four very different musical voices.
