About
Also known as: Maargos Valle, Marcos Kostenbader Valle, Marcus Valle
Few artists have threaded together as many Brazilian sounds as Marcos Valle. The Rio de Janeiro born singer songwriter helped bring bossa nova to international ears in the 1960s, and his second album's standout track "Samba de Verão" (better known as "Summer Samba") became a genuine US hit when Walter Wanderley covered it. Valle never stood still stylistically, weaving soul, funk, jazz and dance music into his samba and bossa nova foundation across a career spanning six decades. His 1982 self titled album gave the world "Estrelar", co written with Leon Ware, which Valle himself rates above "Summer Samba" for the way it pulled in younger generations across Europe. The early 1970s record Garra showed a darker, more political side, with tracks quietly skewering Brazil's military dictatorship. His 2010 album Estática marked a return to organic arrangements, complete with horn and string sections, and earned some of the most enthusiastic critical notices of his career. His most recent studio album, Cinzento, appeared in 2020.
