About
Marcus Strickland plays soprano, alto, and tenor saxophone, and he moves between all three with serious fluency. Based out of Miami, he has built a career that stretches from straight ahead jazz to something far more hybrid: his Twi Life project digs into the intersection of jazz with soul and hip hop, drawing on the J Dilla aesthetic of intricate, "drunk drumming" and tonal nuance. On those records he steps into the role of beat maker and composer as well as saxophonist. His 2016 Blue Note debut Nihil Novi and the follow up People of the Sun in 2018 marked a real peak in visibility, though he had been releasing music on his own Strick Muzik label since 2006. He has spent time on the bandstand with Roy Haynes, Christian McBride, Dave Douglas, and Jeff Tain Watts, and appeared on two Grammy nominated recordings. His twin brother E.J. Strickland is the drummer in his quartet.
