Few composers have pushed the boundaries of big band jazz quite like Maria Schneider, whose orchestra has been a fixture in New York and on international stages since the early 1990s. She built her musical voice partly through years spent as an assistant to the legendary Gil Evans, helping him on projects with Sting and on the film The Color of Money. That apprenticeship clearly left its mark: her writing has a cinematic sweep and orchestral depth that sets her work apart from most jazz ensembles working today. The Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra has racked up multiple Grammy wins, including large ensemble jazz awards for Concert in the Garden, The Thompson Fields, and Data Lords. That last album reflects her well known advocacy against big tech and data companies, with pieces commissioned by the U.S. Library of Congress. Her 2013 album Winter Morning Walks took jazz into classical territory, winning a Grammy for Best Classical Contemporary Composition. She is also an avid birdwatcher, and bird sounds and themes have quietly threaded themselves through albums including Sky Blue and The Thompson Fields.
