About
Also known as: Marin Alsopp
Marin Alsop made history as the first woman to lead a major American orchestra when she took the helm of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in 2005, and she went on to hold that post for over fifteen years. She also became the first conductor ever to receive a MacArthur Fellowship, the so called Genius Grant, recognised for her work in orchestral leadership and contemporary classical music. Her conducting career has spanned continents, from serving as Principal Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra to leading the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. Alsop has always pushed classical music toward wider audiences. With the BSO she launched OrchKids, a music education program for underprivileged children in Baltimore, alongside free podcasts and multimedia series aimed at demystifying the concert hall. She now serves as chief conductor of the Ravinia Festival and music director laureate in Baltimore, and her advocacy for female conductors continues through the Taki Alsop Conducting Fellowship, which she co founded in 2002.
