If you've ever watched The Twilight Zone, you've already heard Marius Constant without knowing it. That instantly recognizable guitar theme was cobbled together by CBS music director Lud Gluskin from two obscure pieces Constant had written for a stock music library, and for years Constant himself had no idea his work was being used. The irony is that this accidental hit overshadowed a genuinely adventurous compositional career: Constant spent decades writing ballet scores for Roland Petit and Maurice Béjart, cofounded the pioneering Ensemble Ars Nova in 1963, and collaborated with director Peter Brook on a stripped down Carmen adaptation that became an international success. His 103 Regards dans l'eau is a violin concerto with 103 titled movements drawing on literary and scientific texts about water, which gives a fair sense of how far his ambitions stretched beyond television themes.
