About
Mark Lotz is a flautist based between Germany and the Netherlands whose work sits at the intersection of contemporary jazz, chamber music, and global influences. He leads Freshta, a five piece European jazz ensemble whose members have connections to labels like ECM and ACT and have worked alongside figures such as Chris Potter, Henry Threadgill, Carla Bley, and author Orhan Pamuk. The group brings together Claudio Puntin on clarinets, Jörg Brinkmann on cello, Jeroen van Vliet on piano, and Dirk Peter Kölsch on drums. The Freshta project is built around a serious piece of subject matter: the music is dedicated to Freshta Kohistani, an Afghan women's rights activist who was murdered. Lotz shaped the ensemble's sound around intense compositions and improvisation, arriving at something that feels at once powerful, mystical, and deeply moving.
