About
Winning the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Trumpet Competition in 2014 put Marquis Hill on the map, and the Chicago born trumpet player has been making good on that promise ever since. His sound pulls from a wide pool: hip hop, R&B, Chicago house, neo soul, and jazz all feed into his playing, giving it a distinctly modern feel without losing sight of the tradition. That competition win landed him a deal with Concord Jazz, which produced The Way We Play in 2016. Hill leads his own outfit, the Marquis Hill Blacktet, and has toured with Marcus Miller. His discography is restless and varied, ranging from the meditative Meditation Tape to the collaborative Chicago Experiment sessions alongside Makaya McCraven, Jeff Parker, and Joel Ross. The 2022 album New Gospel Revisited revisited his debut with fresh arrangements, showing he treats his own catalogue as something still worth digging into.
