Martina Topley Bird's voice is one of the most distinctive in British music, and it first reached the world through trip hop pioneer Tricky's debut album Maxinquaye in 1995, where nearly all her vocals were recorded in a single take. That raw, instinctive approach defined what she brought to the Bristol sound, and she continued working with Tricky on Nearly God and Pre Millennium Tension before eventually stepping out on her own. Her 2003 solo debut Quixotic was a Mercury Prize finalist and showed just how far her vision stretched beyond trip hop, weaving together jazz, experimental textures and dark pop into something genuinely hard to categorise. The Blue God followed in 2008 to strong reviews, with the BBC comparing it to a collision of Ella Fitzgerald, ska and acid folk. She has also left her mark on some landmark records, lending her voice to Gorillaz's Demon Days and Massive Attack's Heligoland, the latter of which she toured globally in support of.
