About
Also known as: すずきまさあき
Few conductors have committed to Bach on the scale Masaaki Suzuki has. The Japanese organist, harpsichordist and conductor founded Bach Collegium Japan in 1990, and the ensemble spent over two decades recording every single one of Bach's church cantatas for BIS Records, a 55 volume series completed in 2013. The secular cantatas followed, wrapping up in 2018, and Suzuki has kept going from there: complete organ music, all four books of the Clavier Übung, the Brandenburg Concertos, the Orchestral Suites and a full cycle of solo harpsichord works. Their St. John Passion picked up a Cannes Classical Award, and the Motets recording won a German Record Critics' Award, a Diapason d'Or and a BBC Music Magazine Award. Suzuki's reach goes well beyond Bach. He and Bach Collegium Japan have tackled Mozart's Requiem, Beethoven's Ninth in Wagner's piano reduction, and choral works by Handel, Zelenka and Schütz. He serves as Principal Guest Conductor of the Yale Schola Cantorum and has stepped onto the podium for the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, among many others.
