About
Mat McHugh is an Australian singer and guitarist best known as the founder and frontman of The Beautiful Girls. He started working on early versions of the band's first EP, Morning Sun, back in 2000. Drummer Bruce Braybrooke came on board soon after, though he was still playing with the punk band Frenzel Rhomb at the time and only joined full time in 2006. Bass player and producer Paul Bromley, a well known name in Australian reggae circles, arrived in early 2007 and helped shape the group's sound. McHugh's solo career took off after a motorcycle accident left him housebound for a month. He used the time to write his first solo record, Separatista, which came out in Australia and the United States under the name Mat McHugh and the Blackbird. His music sits in the pop and acoustic camp, built around his voice and guitar, and he has spent well over a decade writing, composing and performing.
