Before he became the brooding folk songwriter you hear today, Matt Elliott spent years making abrasive electronic music under the name The Third Eye Foundation, releasing records through Domino and building a reputation as a sought after remixer for acts like Mogwai, Ulver, Yann Tiersen and Thurston Moore. Originally from Bristol and now living in France, he made a sharp left turn in 2003 with The Mess We Made, trading drum machines for acoustic guitars and a far darker emotional register. His solo work has drawn comparisons to Tindersticks and The Black Heart Procession, and the run of albums he released on the French label Ici, d'ailleurs, including Drinking Songs, Failing Songs and Howling Songs, cemented his reputation for slow, heavy, grief soaked folk. He has kept up a steady output ever since, with The End of Days arriving in 2023 and a live revisit of Drinking Songs released in 2024 to mark twenty years since that album first came out.
