About
Matt Mays built his reputation the hard way, fronting Matt Mays & El Torpedo and riding the back of "Cocaine Cowgirl" to become one of the most talked about acts in Canadian rock. That song got saturation airplay on Canadian rock radio in 2005 and heavy rotation on MuchMusic, and the band swept the 2006 East Coast Music Awards, taking home group of the year, radio rock recording of the year, album of the year, and single of the year in a single night. Ron MacLean of Hockey Night in Canada named them among the artists he never leaves home without, and they closed out a national broadcast with that same song. Mays has always had a restless creative streak. He put out When the Angels Make Contact as a soundtrack to an unfinished film he was making, featuring Buck 65 and Rose Cousins among others, then followed it with Terminal Romance before eventually going solo. His album Coyote, released in 2012, won the Juno Award for Rock Album of the Year in 2014, cementing his place as one of the more consistently interesting voices in Canadian indie rock.
