About

Matt Mitchell plays jazz piano in a way that is genuinely hard to pin down, and that is exactly the point. Critics have described him as weaving together four distinct jazz piano traditions at once: impressionistic texture from the Bill Evans and Herbie Hancock lineage, the ravenous attack of Cecil Taylor and Don Pullen, the rhythmic rush of Bud Powell, and the cool abstract logic of Paul Bley. The result does not sound like a patchwork but unmistakably like himself. Based in New York, Mitchell has worked as a sideman with Tim Berne's Snakeoil, John Hollenbeck's Large Ensemble, the Claudia Quintet, and Rudresh Mahanthappa's band, while also leading his own groups including a sextet and a trio with bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Dan Weiss. His 2017 release A Pouting Grimace is a ten part suite built from a single bar vamp, nodding to Roscoe Mitchell's 1977 piece Nonaah. He also publishes collections of études and teaches at the Center for Improvisational Music in New York.
