About
Matthew Halsall is a Manchester trumpeter and composer who built his own corner of the jazz world, quite literally. In 2008 he started Gondwana Records, and the label's first release was his own debut, Sending My Love. Since then it has grown into a home for artists like GoGo Penguin, Hania Rani and Portico Quartet. His sound leans on the spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Miles Davis, with a trip hop streak that nods to The Cinematic Orchestra. The breakthrough came with On the Go in 2011, which won the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Winners Award and earned a MOBO nomination for best jazz act. Later came When the World Was One with the Gondwana Orchestra, named iTunes Jazz Album of the Year in 2014, and Salute To The Sun in 2020, where a new band of young Manchester players explored ecology and harmony with nature. His latest album is An Ever Changing View, released in 2023.
