About

Also known as: Matt Shipp

Matthew Shipp has spent decades carving out a genuinely singular voice in avant garde jazz, one that AllMusic describes as 'unique, instantly recognizable' and that Jazziz called 'stunning in originality'. Based in New York since 1984, he first made his name in free jazz before pushing into territory that touches contemporary classical music, hip hop, and electronica. His long run with saxophonist David S. Ware's quartet produced a staggering body of work across labels including Columbia, AUM Fidelity, and DIW, and Gary Giddins once called that group 'the best small band in jazz today'. Shipp's cross genre pull has won him some unlikely admirers. David Bowie praised his work specifically, Thurston Moore noted that Shipp draws the same crowd as Merzbow, and Henry Rollins released several of his records through his own imprint, writing that Shipp 'stretches the limits of what is considered Jazz music yet at the same time describes perfectly the fierce freedom of it'. His 2013 solo piano record Piano Sutras drew comparisons to music that 'frames up a whole history', and he has also served as a key curatorial force at Thirsty Ear Recordings.
