About

Max Emanuel Cencic is a Croatian countertenor who has built one of the most distinctive careers in Baroque opera, known for an almost uncanny vocal range and the dramatic intensity he brings to castrato roles. Born in Zagreb, he sang with the Vienna Boys' Choir before going on to perform as a male soprano, then retrained his voice entirely to become a countertenor, making his debut in that register in 2001. Since then he has recorded and performed across the world, collaborating with conductors such as William Christie, Diego Fasolis and Riccardo Minasi. His catalogue is seriously impressive, covering Handel's Tamerlano and Alessandro, Vinci's Artaserse alongside Philippe Jaroussky and Franco Fagioli, and Leonardo Vinci's Catone in Utica, which he also co produced. He has staged operas too, directing and performing in Handel's Arminio at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe. His recent uploads include arias from Tamerlano and Porpora's Carlo il Calvo, giving a taste of the repertoire he continues to champion.
