About
Also known as: Max Alfred Elliott, Max Elliot, Max Elliott, マキシ・プリースト
Maxi Priest is one of only two British reggae acts, alongside UB40, to score a number one on the American Billboard chart, which he did with "Close to You" in 1990. Born in Lewisham and of Jamaican descent, he built his reputation through South London's Saxon Studio International sound system before becoming a genuinely global figure in reggae fusion, blending lovers rock warmth with R&B smoothness in a way that crossed over without selling out. His 1987 breakthrough album Maxi, featuring a cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World" recorded with Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, cemented his place among Britain's finest reggae vocalists. He followed that with a string of notable collaborations, including a top ten US duet with Roberta Flack and a hit with Shaggy in 1996. His 2014 album Easy to Love debuted at number two on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums Chart, proof that his appeal never really faded.
