Maxwell Quartet brings together four friends from Scotland and England who have built their sound around a genuine belief that folk music sits at the root of classical music. The ensemble blends Scottish folk arrangements with the classical string quartet tradition, treating every melody as a song and every rhythm as a dance. Their programmes typically put the two worlds in direct conversation: works by composers such as Mozart and Schubert alongside original Scottish folk material. The four members are Colin Scobie and George Smith on violin, Elliot Perks on viola, and Duncan Strachan on cello. It is a combination that has earned them an international reputation for making something that feels entirely coherent rather than a novelty collision of genres.
