About
Also known as: Lana Michelle Moorer, Lana Moorer, MC Lytro
MC Lyte was the first female rapper to put out a full solo album, 1988's Lyte as a Rock, and it's still talked about as one of the most important rap records of the decade. It gave her "10% Dis" and "Paper Thin", and The Village Voice called her the best female vocalist in hip hop that same year. Her follow up, Eyes on This, made her one of the first solo women rappers on the Billboard 200. The hits kept coming. "Poor Georgie" put her on the Hot 100, "Ruffneck" made her the first solo woman rapper with a gold certification from the RIAA, and "Keep On, Keepin' On" with Xscape cracked the top ten. She's worked with everyone from Sinéad O'Connor and Janet Jackson to Missy Elliott and Beyoncé, picked up a Grammy nomination for "Ride Wit Me", and was the first woman to perform hip hop at the White House. She's also acted, DJed and directed, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2026.
