Megaherz is a German neue deutsche härte band from Munich whose name is a pun: "Megaherz" means "mega heart" in German, but sounds exactly like "megahertz." Formed in 1993, they started out in dark alternative metal territory, drawing comparisons to Faith No More, before shifting toward the heavier, industrial tinged sound associated with Rammstein and Oomph! A quirky throughline in their early albums is a tradition of basing at least one song on a classic German fairy tale, from Rapunzel to Rumpelstiltskin. Their biggest charting single remains "Freiflug," which hit number 7 on the Deutsche Alternative Charts back in 1999. The band has cycled through several vocalists over the years, most notably losing founder Alexx Wesselsky in 2003 when he left to form Eisbrecher. Despite the turbulence, guitarist Christian Bystron and bassist Wenz Weninger have held things together since 1995. Megaherz have kept releasing records and touring through it all, and as recently as 2024 they put out new visuals for tracks including "Freiflug" and "Rabenherz," suggesting the band is very much still active.
