About

Also known as: Melba More

Melba Moore's career has two big acts, and she nailed both. She won a Tony in 1970 for playing Lutiebelle in Purlie, then turned to records and landed her breakthrough in 1976 with the Van McCoy penned "This Is It". It cracked the UK top 10 and ended the year as the number one disco track there. Her take on "Lean on Me" brought a Grammy nomination, thanks in part to that famously stretched final note. The 1980s were her R&B peak. "Love's Comin' at Ya" went top 5 on the R&B chart and a post disco hit across Europe, and "Read My Lips" earned a Grammy nod in the rock category, making her only the fourth black artist nominated there. In 1986 she hit number 1 on the R&B charts twice, including the duet "A Little Bit More" with Freddie Jackson. She has kept busy on stage and screen, from Les Misérables to her one woman show, and released a duet album with Phil Perry in 2009.
