Melvyn Tan is a Singapore born British classical pianist whose career has been shaped by a deep fascination with historical performance practice. He spent years championing the fortepiano, even getting to record on Beethoven's own Broadwood instrument, and in doing so shifted how many musicians think about early keyboard instruments. These days he works across a much wider repertoire, from Bach all the way through to Messiaen. He has singled out Messiaen's Vingt regards sur l'enfant Jésus as his proudest achievement, a piece he spent nearly two years learning and describes as a genuinely life changing, spiritual experience. Based in London since 1978, Tan performs worldwide and has brought his playing to some unexpected settings, including a 2007 performance at the Royal Academy of Arts for Jasper Conran's London Fashion Week collection.
