About
Also known as: Meshugah, Meshugga, Mesuggah, メシュガー, 메슈가
Meshuggah are the Swedish band that quietly rewired what extreme metal could sound like. Coming out of Umeå in 1987, they built a reputation on tangled polyrhythms and polymetered song structures, the kind of thing that makes you lose count and not mind. They started out as a cult favourite in underground circles, but their influence kept spreading, and by the late 2000s they were credited with inspiring the whole djent scene. The lineup has been steady since 2004, with Jens Kidman on vocals, Fredrik Thordendal on lead guitar, Mårten Hagström on rhythm guitar, Tomas Haake on drums and Dick Lövgren on bass. Nine studio albums in, they have picked up Swedish Grammis nominations for Catch Thirtythree and obZen, plus a Grammy nomination for Clockworks. Rolling Stone and Alternative Press have both put them near the top of metal's most important bands. Their latest album is Immutable, released in 2022.
